Year 7
Traditionally, Humanities curriculum for Year 7 students focusses on the study of ancient cultures. At Alkira we integrate this approach with our focus on whole-student learning, by integrating units of study across the curriculum. Our Humanities units for Year 7 ensure the students are introduced to a wide range of historical, geographical, cultural and economic knowledge, and where possible, we work with other domain areas to complement the topics and skills being studied. By offering students a smorgasbord of learning at this level, they can explore a wide range of options and develop a broad general knowledge base to see them through the more demanding senior years curriculum.

Term 1 offers students an opportunity to get to know themselves as learners and to understand what it means to be an independent learner in a secondary college setting.
In Term 2 students explore the concept of Community. Melding the English curriculum’s reading text with the Humanities study of ancient communities, students learn about how communities and societies form. This forms a fundamental part of their developing civics and citizenship learning.
In Term 3 students take a focussed look at the indigenous history of Australia through a geography based unit exploring land use. Students look at land use across time and learn how to understand change as it relates to human interactions with the landscape.
Term 4 gives the students a global focus for learning. They explore Global Citizenship through the lens of Economics and undertake an economic case study on microcredit as a solution to global poverty.
